The first time I saw a motorized teenager whizzing past me with the writing “De Puta Madre” on his helmet, I thought: !!!
I imagined it was a do-it-yourself helmet, and I also imagined that the mother in question didn’t have an idyllic relationship with her son. I had to change my mind when I happened to see the same writing on t-shirts and jeans: De Puta Madre is a clothing brand and in Spanish slang it means “I’m fabulous” (so mothers can rest assured). She was born in Barcelona, behind the bars of a prison, from the marker of Ilan Fernandez, who was serving a sentence for international drug and arms trafficking and didn’t know how to pass the time. Ilan gave a warder one of his T-shirts and soon found himself inundated with requests.
After serving his nine-year sentence, Fernandez founded a company with a Roman entrepreneur and the De Puta Madre brand exploded. The story of the former Spanish drug trafficker also inspired a book, “Suerte”, written by Giulio Laurenti, which will be released by Einaudi in January 2010.
Ilan Fernandez has organized several demonstrations against the use of drugs and against paedophilia, to tell young people: don’t commit crimes, don’t take drugs, be provocative in your clothing but never go further, because you risk losing years of your life.
Omitting any judgment on the story of the former trafficker who becomes an entrepreneur, I advise you to take a tour of the De Puta Madre 69 website, to be informed and not be shocked if you have not yet had anything to do with this brand.
