1840-1860 Vintage Miser bags America and England/Red bag miser/Victorian coin purse knit/Stingy 1840-1860
Vintage miser bags. Vintage jewellery. The mid-19th century 1940s-60s crochet miser bags created in England and America, from Anna Johnson’s account in her book “Handbags” – hung like exotic sea slugs from the waists of thrifty ladies. The men wore them too but theirs were three times as long and tucked into jacket pockets or stretched out like watch chains. The bag owes its name (“stingy”) to the small hidden opening in the center where the fingers struggled to insert, and closed the bag with one or two silver rings. Excellent condition, in the middle it has a few mendings which is the discreet charm of an ancient jewel that silently tells its story!!!
